Chapter 14 â Inside
Zane put his arm around my shoulder. "We know you would have, Ren. The issue is how long it would have taken you to investigate every part of the gate." He laughed as we made our way to Adam and Jen, who were already at our designated meeting point.
I was still a bit jarred by the push, but those thoughts disappeared entirely as I looked around the Everwood.
Where we just entered stood a tree, grander than any building I'd ever seen. The tree stood at the centre of the Dungeon, with a canopy that hung over the immediate area.
That was what stuck out the mostâthe darkness. I'd read through countless books discussing the landscape of the forest, and it still caught me off guard. Light shone through the canopy in some areas creating shadows of the leaves and branches. It wasn't impossible to see, but the mix of light of dark made some areas harder to notice.
Day and night worked differently in the Everwood, but they both existed. And if I hadn't known to look, I might have thought it was already night-time.
As I walked inside, I noticed people bringing out their torches and enchanted items for visibility. I felt comfortable without it so far, but as we moved into the forest proper, we would likely have to do something similar.
While I observed the tall tree and the entrance within it, groups were already making their way into the forest.
Noticing how quickly people were already on the move, Zane and I made our way to the group faster. Stinky and Pinky were silently watching the surroundings for any encroaching monsters. They usually didn't come this close to the centre of the Dungeon, but anything was possible.
"Focus up, from here on out, you're in charge, Jen," Adam announced as we grouped up.
"Right. We need to figure something out first, though. Zane, do you think it's a good time to go?" Jen took charge as planned.
Zane gave the thumbs up before taking off in a jog towards the other side of the tree. Stinky ran with him as Pinky stayed by our side.
"Ugh, what is he doing?" Cassie asked.
"He's scouting out the other teams," Jen said.
"Shouldn't we go with him? He's not going to pick a fight by himself, is he?" Britta asked as she tapped on the sword at her waist.
"No, he'll be fine,â Jen said. âHe's not getting close. He's been paying attention to our classmates the last few weeks. Based on that, he's going to watch others and see where they go. Even if Everwood is huge, we don't want to be competing for space since there are so many groups in here. He's using his Skill to see who's heading where to figure out if we should go in a similar direction as them." Jen bit her lip as she looked around at the other groups. "It sucks though, I hoped we could wait for the prince. I wanted to go in the complete opposite direction as them.
